The quick version

An apparel brand ran a scrolling announcement bar across the top of every page, in black text. They tested the same bar in red, with the same wording, and changed nothing else on the site. Conversion rose 15%, and revenue per visitor rose 15% across about 1,800 orders.

The setup

The announcement bar sits at the top of every page and usually carries something the brand wants every visitor to see. If it matches the header styling exactly, it reads as part of the navigation and shoppers miss it.

This brand wanted to see what calling more attention to the header could do.

What they tested

They made one simple change to their header bar: they changed the color from black to red so it stood out more. The wording, placement, and everything else stayed the same on every page.

Control: Announcement bar in black, the site's default.

Variant: The same bar in red.

Announcement bar test: control black announcement bar versus variant red announcement bar on the same product page

The results

Over 29 days, roughly 88,000 visitors and 1,800 orders, split evenly between the two groups.

  • Add to cart rate: +5%

  • Checkout begin rate: +10%

  • Conversion rate: +15%

  • Cart abandonment: -5%

  • Revenue / visitor: +15%

  • Gross profit / visitor: +15%

Average order value and units per order held flat, so none of the lift came out of margin.

The takeaway

Before you write new messaging, make sure your current messaging is being seen.

In this test, a more legible site-wide bar lifted add to cart by 5%, checkout begin by 10%, and conversion by 15%. The effect grew deeper in the funnel because the bar followed the shopper around the site. The message showed up at each decision point, so its impact may have built over the session.

Why it worked

  • Color changes are easy to test. Changing color takes a few minutes and doesn't need a designer or developer, especially if you're using the Atlas Visual Builder. That makes it a good first test for any brand.

  • The brand didn't give up margin. Gross profit per visitor rose 15%, in line with revenue per visitor. Order value stayed flat, so the gain came from more shoppers buying, not from discounts or smaller margins.

Intelligems lets you A/B test announcement bars, site-wide styling, and page content on your Shopify store, with COGS built in so you see the profit impact, not just revenue, without any coding.
