What should my announcement bar say during my Black Friday sale?

What should my announcement bar say during my Black Friday sale?

Shoppers need the deal in seconds.

A sale bar has one job: telling shoppers in seconds that there is a deal, what it is and how to get it. Which message leads the bar depends on what your shoppers still need to know, and that changes as the season moves.

A launch, free shipping and the sale each want a line, so your bar cycles them, and a shopper may catch only one.

A sale nobody notices changes nobody’s behavior

Your bar may show a phone shopper just “Black Friday sale”, with no deal named and no way to get it. That bar answers only the first of three questions your shoppers need answered within seconds. Is there a deal, what is it and how do I get it?

An offer shoppers cannot take in changes nothing they do. It also muddies your tests, which end up measuring whether shoppers noticed the offer at all. Open your site on your phone: does your bar answer all three within seconds?

A phone bar that names the sale but not the deal leaves two of three shopper questions unanswered.

A short Intelligems video explains offer clarity as the effort a shopper spends understanding a deal and names where a site can show it; its explanation starts at 0:21.

Shoppers look for the offer they clicked

After a click from your ad or email, your bar is where a shopper confirms the offer, and product and collection pages repeat it. Without that confirmation, they are left asking where to get what your ad offered.

The confirmation includes how to get the deal: the code, or that it applies itself. A guest at a CRO agency goes further: a gift your ad promises belongs in your bar, on every page and in your cart.

A deal, a threshold or a deadline can lead

Which one fits moves with the week. Each needs its own condition.

  • The deal itself, named outright, tells shoppers what they get.

  • A threshold works only while it is clear and within reach.

  • A real deadline, such as a shipping cut-off, speaks to gift buyers. A guest at a messaging-focused agency adds that urgency works only when it is true.

Over the Black Friday weekend, shoppers comb through offers, so a line like “Black Friday: [your deal] on the whole store, through Monday” meets them. Near shipping cut-offs, they ask whether an order will arrive in time, which suits “Order by [your cut-off] for delivery before the holidays.”

Each lead answers one worry, at a cost

A deadline keeps changing, a threshold needs your cart’s help, and the deal crowds out the rest. Each buys an answer to one worry.

  • If shoppers worry about gift arrival, a shipping deadline speaks to that, at the cost of a line that keeps changing.

  • If shoppers cannot tell whether a threshold is within reach, the threshold speaks to that, at the cost of needing the buy box or cart to show it too.

  • If shoppers are still asking what the deal is, the deal leads, at the cost of leaving the deadline and the threshold out.

The number that settles a bar test is revenue per visitor (sales divided by visitors), split by device. With the same offer in both versions, it tracks your profit.

Whatever your sale is for, clicks on your bar say nothing about money, and one blended number can hide a gain on one device. In one fitness-accessory store’s test this summer, the all-device read showed no clear change while desktop gained.

Gift-arrival worry, rising as cut-offs near, points to a deadline; threshold doubts to the threshold, deal questions to the deal.

One plain offer line has been enough so far

At two stores, one plain offer line held up against no sale message and, on desktop, a busy rotating bar.

For its Labor Day 2026 sale, one wellness brand named the sale and its deal in a top bar. Revenue per visitor rose 5.8% in an Intelligems test, a clear result. Naming the deal is where your bar’s job starts.

This summer, outside any sale, that fitness-accessory store set one fixed free-shipping line against its rotating bar with icons and links. On desktop only, it earned more revenue per visitor, a directional read the freed header space may partly explain. Neither store compared two sale messages; your own test does.

Fitness-accessory store, summer 2026, no sale: desktop revenue per visitor +24%, directional; phones 4% lower, blended +2.6%, weak reads.

Test two sale lines on an earlier sale

An earlier sale has real sale traffic at lower stakes; on Black Friday itself, how you present an existing offer can still be tested. Four moves cover the decision.

  1. Check on your phone that your bar answers the three questions.

  2. Check that it repeats what your ads and emails promise.

  3. Decide which shopper worry your bar speaks to first this week.

  4. On an earlier sale, test two lines that answer the questions differently, and read revenue per visitor by device.

Strong brands treat the bar as part of the offer, not decoration. Intelligems can run your bar lines as a content test and put the winner live. It can also help you design the earlier-sale test and read the result.
