How brands are adding revenue at checkout before BFCM
Nine checkout block ideas brands are testing before BFCM.

Shailee Shah

BFCM is when the most shoppers reach your checkout all year. It's also the last page they see before they buy, and for a long time it was the hardest one to change.
Intelligems' checkout blocks let brands add upsells, trust signals, timers, and shipping messaging directly to Shopify checkout, then test or personalize each one. Brands that get tests live in October have results in hand before the BFCM weekend, so they can turn on what works for their biggest traffic days.
Here are nine checkout block ideas brands are testing right now.
Clear inventory with a checkout upsell.

A checkout upsell doesn't have to push your hero product. It can also help move inventory you want to sell through before the new year.
One eyewear brand used a checkout upsell to offer a SKU it wanted to clear as a low-cost add-on during its 4th of July sale. The block performed well enough that the team is keeping it live through the holidays.
Complete the set.

If your products are designed to work together, checkout is a natural place to fill in the gaps, especially when BFCM shoppers are already stocking up or buying gifts.
A beauty brand tested a checkout upsell that offered shoppers the missing pieces of a three-product system, with a short line explaining how the products work together. Compared with checkout without the upsell, that version lifted conversion rate 7% and revenue per visitor 10% across more than 5,600 orders.
Test how much to discount the upsell.

The discount on a checkout upsell is a lever worth testing on its own, and worth settling before your BFCM offers stack on top of it.
An apparel brand tested 20%, 25%, and 30% off on the same checkout upsell. At 30% off, the share of orders that included the upsell rose from 4% to 6%, and revenue per visitor was up 11% compared with the 20% offer.
Offer a second unit to single-item carts.

Upsells get more relevant when they react to what's already in the cart. During BFCM, a second unit is an easy add for shoppers buying a gift and keeping one for themselves.
A drinkware brand set up its checkout upsells based on cart contents. Shoppers with a single mug in their cart see an offer for a discounted second bottle, while other carts see accessory recommendations.
Put guarantees next to the pay button.

The moment right before a shopper pays is where hesitation shows up most, and BFCM brings in more first-time buyers who don't know your return policy yet.
A wellness brand added money-back guarantee and free returns icons right next to the payment button. Conversion rate rose 8%, and revenue per visitor rose 9% across more than 4,500 orders.
Show your reviews in checkout.

Social proof usually lives on the product page, but it's just as useful once a shopper reaches checkout, especially for new customers comparing you against other BFCM deals.
A children's products brand added its review rating as a header at the top of checkout. The test lifted conversion rate 4% and revenue per visitor 5% across nearly 5,900 orders.
Make trust badges look like your brand.

Generic trust badges can look out of place in an otherwise on-brand checkout, and BFCM is when most new shoppers see it for the first time.
One food brand built its trust and value prop blocks with its own uploaded icons and brand styling, so nothing felt out of place.
Tie countdown timers to a real deadline.

Countdown timers work best when the deadline is real, which makes BFCM a natural fit.
A drinkware brand tested a checkout timer during its Back to School sale, and shoppers who saw the timer converted at a higher rate that week. An always-on version later in the month didn't show the same lift. The takeaway: the timer is great for moments with a real end date, like your BFCM sale ending or a holiday shipping cutoff.
Show progress toward free shipping.

A free shipping progress bar shows shoppers exactly how close they are to qualifying, right where they're deciding whether to add one more item. If you're raising or lowering your threshold for BFCM, the bar makes the change obvious.
One outdoor brand is pairing a progress bar with a free shipping threshold test, $100 versus $125, so the bar updates to match whichever threshold each shopper sees.
What this adds up to:
Checkout used to be the one part of the funnel brands couldn't touch without a developer. Checkout blocks change that. Upsells, guarantees, reviews, timers, and shipping messaging can all go live in checkout and be tested like anything else on your site.
For BFCM, the timing is simple: launch your checkout tests in October, review them in early November, and turn on the winners as personalizations before your sale starts. Timers and free shipping messaging can be scheduled around your BFCM dates.
